Earth Literacy

Part of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce's mission is to promote a balance of conservation and commerce. We recognize that the great beauty and pristine quality of our natural surroundings is one of the primary reasons why people visit and stay in Jackson Hole and the Greater Yellowstone area, and why our local economy remains healthy. We provide a leadership role in creating dialogue about the balance between conservation and commerce through our Power of Place conferences and other avenues. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is the first Chamber of Commerce in the world to endorse the Earth Charter, a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century (see www.earthcharter.org).

Earth Literacy is an education and understanding of the interdependent relationships on the Earth, and an active sharing of responsibility for ensuring the well being of the Earth, of which we are one inhabitant. Jackson Hole is home to many organizations that work at local, state, regional, national, and international levels to promote justice, sustainability, and peace through a diversity of expertise and perspectives including science, policy, the humanities, arts, and spirituality. We encourage you to contact these organizations to learn further how they contribute to what Thomas Berry called "The Great Work."
