Sunset Magazine recently launched the latest in a series of free travel guides, featuring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

The introduction flatters our community and promotes a long stay: "Sharing some of the same gateway areas, like luxe yet down-home Jackson Hole, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone can be experienced on a combined visit--although there's so much to see and do in each, you may want to spend an extravagantly long vacation experiencing all the area has to offer."

Carney Architects Recognized for Jackson Hole Airport Expansion

Project wins accolades: 2010 Merit Award, AIA Denver Chapter and2010 Merit Award, AIA Colorado Chapter
With Gensler Architects, this project entailed an approximately 55,000 sf two-phase expansion and renovation of the existing Jackson Hole Airport in Grand Teton National Park.

For the renovation component of the program, the old airport was transformed from a clustered building design into an open, well-lit, and highly functioning space that is efficient and sustainable, but still retains the motifs and regional character of Jackson Hole, rather than taking on the more generically modern design traits of an urban airport.  The program expansion includes such improvements as a new ticketing area, an enlarged holding room and baggage handling facility, and improved security screening.

The project team made the new airport a model of environmental responsibility, with a LEED Silver rating. As such, various sustainable strategies and materials are incorporated; for example, low-flow plumbing fixtures, regional and recycled materials, and Forest Stewardship Council-certified timber. Low-emitting adhesives, paints, and carpets also maintain a high standard of human healthfulness for airport occupants.

Homewood Suites: Best Performing Hotel

The inaugural Best Performing Hotel Awards were given by hotel research company STR during the 2010 Hotel Data Conference. The hotels were divided into seven chain-scale segments and judged based on reported performance by hotels, including occupancy, average daily rate and revenue per available room, compared with their respective market-scale performance.

The Jackson Hole Homewood Suites by Hilton was selected by STR as the 2010 Best Performing Hotel in the Upscale Chain Scale.

Snake River Brewing Company Honored at World Beer Cup

Those words rang true last week when Snake River Brewing came back from Chicago from the 8th bi-annual World Beer Cup with THREE medals for brewing excellence.

The World Beer Cup is the LARGEST beer event ever, where 642 breweries from 44 countries around the world entered 3,330 beers for the chance to win gold, silver and bronze medals in 90 categories.

"It's the Olympics of beer" states SRB Brew Master, Cory Buenning.  "Every other year in a different locale, we get the opportunity to put our Jackson Hole brews up against classic beers from around the world and often times from their places of particular origin.  For instance, competing against breweries from Germany and winning a gold medal for our Berliner Weisse...a beer that was made famous by German brewers, really shows how American brewers have become some of the most creative artisans of craft-beer in the world."

Snake River Brewing Won Awards For The Following Three Beers:
1. GOLD MEDAL - Berliner Weisse / German-Style Sour Ale
2. SILVER MEDAL - Zonker Stout / Foreign-Style Stout
3. BRONZE MEDAL - Le Serpent / Belgian-Style Flanders/Oud Bruin

Grand Targhee Recognized as Greenest Ski Resort

Grand Targhee Resort was recently recognized by Skiing Magazine as the Greenest Ski Resort in their “Skiing’s Greenest All-Stars” story.

“We’re thrilled with the acknowledgement and recognize the responsibility that comes with being positioned as one of the ski industry’s leaders in sustainability,” said Christina Thomure, Director of Sustainable Operations at Grand Targhee Resort.  “While we are proud of what we have been able to accomplish, we aren’t perfect, and understand that being sustainable is as much about committing to the process as it is about implementing changes.”

Thomure recently spoke about the elements of the New Economy, including the triple bottom line and biomimicry, at “Gotham Goes Green” a sustainability-themed media event in New York City.  For more information, visit our blog at: http://blog.grandtarghee.com/2010/01/sustainable-a-ghee/

Grand Targhee Resort was the first business to become climate registered through the North American Climate Registry, an independent organization that helps businesses track and measure greenhouse gas emissions.  Grand Targhee Resort reported a total of 2958 metric tons of GHG’s for 2007 and is near completion on an inventory of 2008 emissions.

“We established a baseline in 2007 and the 2008 measurements will help us determine where adjustments need to be made to continue to decrease our greenhouse gas emissions,” said Thomure.

This winter, Grand Targhee launched a glass reduction initiative that included eliminating 75% of the glass containers at the resort.  Switching to cans from glass bottles, adding beer taps and boxed wines have made the biggest impact.  (For more about the challenges and expense associated with glass recycling see this story from the Associated Press).
