The Snake River is the thirteenth longest river in the United States, spanning almost 108,000 square miles. The first American group to cross the Rocky Mountains and sail down the Snake and Columbia rivers to the Pacific Ocean were par of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804–1806. In addition to small aquatic species, much of the Snake River watershed supports larger animals including numerous species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.
