If you don’t know Shelby Read watch out! She is an energizing, enthusiastic breath (dare we say gust) of fresh air.

Shelby embodies one of the central pillars of the Rising Star Award - Shelby enriches the lives of those around her. And there are many people around her given her deep involvement in the community.

Since moving to Jackson in 2012, Shelby has worked with international students at the Journeys School of Teton Science Schools as the Global Studies Faculty and served as the Executive Director of InterConnections 21.

community foundation jackson hole logoWhen asked where she sees herself in five years, Shelby’s commitment to the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole came up immediately. She sees herself there, improving lives through philanthropic leadership by serving donors, nonprofit organizations, and the community as a whole. Her favorite part of the Community Foundation’s mission is supporting the work of non-profits through grants and funding. In doing so she sees different segments of the community that she may not have been exposed to otherwise.

Her work at the Community Foundation reflects her Master’s Degree in International Leadership and Non-profit Management Portland State University. Connected to her degree, Shelby added that in 5 years she would like the Student Loan Forgiveness Program to follow through and pay off her student loans, as is intended for non-profit workers.

young professionals of the tetons logoShelby is also a leader of the Young Professionals of the Tetons which has been brought back to life and is stronger than ever. She recently lead a class – Professionalism 101She shared that one of the best pieces of advice she’s received (and passes on) is to be accountable when you make mistakes. The second is to not “wear pjs to work!”. Being that, as a young woman of color, Shelby says that she is intentional to always put her best foot forward.

Shelby will be passing these lessons on to for a lifetime as she will soon be a mother!

We asked Shelby some fun questions too…

  • What’s your favorite ice cream? “Being an ice-cream lover, it’s hard to pick-- butter pecan and cookies and cream are certainly contenders.
  • What would her best day in Jackson look like? “Breakfast at Cultivate - the new restaurant in the Jackson Hole Playhouse - an afternoon movie on the new reclining seats at Movieworks Cinemas followed by cocktails at Teton Tiger’s happy hour.”
