The cottonwoods have begun to turn yellow and the air is crisp and cool. A dozen volunteers from the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce gather in the middle of Jackson’s Town Square to begin laying mats, raising tents, and speaking with curious visitors. Excitement begins to fill the air as artists arrive carrying easels, pedestals, paints, clay, and other tools of the trade. Crowds gather around their favorite artists and at 9:00am sharp the Jackson Hole QuickDraw begins!
Each year, hundreds of artists converge in the mountainous western edge of Wyoming to celebrate the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. The Jackson Hole QuickDraw Art Sale and Auction has been held for more than 20 years and draws art fans from down the street and around the world. It’s an event that thrills the novice and the professional art enthusiasts alike.
With just 90 minutes to complete a work of art, the participating artists come prepared with sketches and stories. One may have heard an elk bugling on the misty banks of Flat Creek. One may have seen a softball teammate sprint like a jackrabbit. Another may have caught an elusive Snake River Cutthroat as the sun set the night before.
The artists work feverishly for an hour and a half and spectators see their visions come to life on canvas and in clay. Attendees are invited to stroll through the scenic tree-filled park in Town Square with their coffee, stopping wherever their eyes settle. Bidding registration takes place throughout the morning in the middle of the square with volunteers from the Chamber.
The big sales tent on Deloney Street fills up quickly when the QuickDraw concludes. It soon contains the auctioneers, artists, bidders, and onlookers. The live auction is a fun and spirited affair as art enthusiasts bid for their favorite pieces and the artists wait in anticipation as their work is displayed for the crowd. As Tammy Christel suggested in the Jackson Hole Art Blog, “Get your latte and buckle up!”
The Jackson Hole QuickDraw Art Sale and Auction will be held on Saturday, September 16 from 9:00am. The highlight of the live auction will be the sale of the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival featured painting, "Rise Above" by the 2017 featured artist Mark Keathley. Attendees will have seen his work, “Rise Above,” displayed on the posters, wine bottles, and printed programs throughout the festival. To learn more about the featured artist, please click here.
