Shopping Locally Supports the Community - By Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo
November 2015 Message for Chambers of Commerce
With the arrival of the holiday season, we gather with friends and loved ones to remember all the things we have to be thankful for. One thing most of us are thankful for is living in a great community, in which many of our fellow residents are like a family. While we give thanks during the holidays we should also remember to thank the local small businesses that support our communities, create jobs and provide growth in Wyoming. Over the last few years, more and more consumers are realizing the effects of supporting these businesses during the holidays by buying locally.
For the sixth year in a row, the Senate passed a resolution designating the Saturday after Thanksgiving as “Small Business Saturday.” This designation is intended to draw attention to the local businesses that create jobs, drive our economy and sustain our communities. This year, on November 28, help raise awareness and appreciation for the small businesses in your community by shopping locally.
Local spending and business growth directly benefits the local economy. For every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 recirculates several times for the community. This revenue helps drive employment opportunities and can provide funding for needed projects – anything from road maintenance to technology updates in local schools.
Last year, 88 million Americans turned out in record numbers to support their neighborhoods and experience all that their local manufactures/risk takers entrepreneurs had to offer. Consumers spent over $14 billion on Small Business Saturday, a two percent increase from last year. Hopefully this year will be even better.
Small, locally-owned businesses are the engine of our recovery, and a part of our families, so let’s get out there and show our appreciation!
