Students will have the choice of making a wall hanging, a "throw" size or twin sized quilt. Exactly what makes a "modern" quilt? Angela Pingel defines it as follows: “We define modern quilts as quilts that are functional, include bold colors, and are inspired by modern design. Minimalism, asymmetry expansive negative space, and alternate grid work are often a part of modern quilt compositions, as are improvisational piecing and solid fabrics.” The basis for the quilt is from a pattern called Moons over Bars, which was juried into a modern quilt exhibition that traveled for a year with AQS and won multiple Viewer's Choice awards during that year. The entire quilt is pieced, including the inset circles. The border, added for this class, includes appliqué, both raw edge and turned edge. Both are stitched in place by machine, but allows the student to try both methods. The class will meet five times during the spring session, with time in between several classes. We will first complete the center of the quilt, with the bars. Then inset the circles, make and add the borders and complete the appliqué. All lessons will be available from drop box for progress as allowed by each student's time.
